March 17th-18th, 24-25th, & 30th-31st

This training is the first step for any individual who wishes to mediate privately or qualify for the circuit court roster approved list of mediators. It is also for those who wish to mediate as a volunteer for any of the seventeen Michigan Community Mediation Centers. Participants will receive access to a drop box folder or jump-drive and a comprehensive mediation manual containing reproducible mediation forms. By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

• Identify various conflict management styles and how they can be used in dealing with conflict

• Interpret nonverbal communication effectively to understand the messages being conveyed

• Listen effectively using critical active-listening skills

• Define issues, positions, interests, and emotions and explore why they are important in mediation

• Ask effective questions to clarify, identify issues and provide new insight and meanings

• Manage the emotional climate in mediation and manage power imbalances and conditions

• Set the tone while establishing ground rules and guidelines for the mediation session

• Build an agenda that identifies and prioritizes the issues to be mediated

• Guide the parties through the collaborative problem-solving work of negotiation

• Understand the mechanics of writing a settlement agreement and closure of the mediation process
